The Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata, also called Mother-in-Law’s Tongue) is the plant you cannot kill. It stores water in its thick upright leaves, so a fortnight without watering is nothing to it.
Why plant parents love it
- Night oxygen: one of the few plants that releases oxygen after dark — ideal beside a bed
- Near-zero maintenance: tolerates low light and irregular watering
- NASA clean-air list: filters formaldehyde and benzene
Care at a glance
- Light: Anything from low to bright indirect
- Water: Every 2–3 weeks. Overwatering is the only real risk
- Soil: Free-draining; add cocopeat for aeration
- Pet safe: No — mildly toxic if chewed
